On August 9th, 1963, Whitney Elizabeth Houston was
born in Newark, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Emily "Cissy"
Houston, a Grammy-winning gospel singer, and John R. Houston, who oversaw his
daughter's production company.
She came from a long line of singers and performers,
so she was no stranger to the entertainment business. Along with her godmother
Darlene Love, her cousins Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick, and her mother's vocal
group, the "Sweet Inspirations," who sang backup for Aretha Franklin,
are all well-known vocalists.
She learnt to play the piano when she was eleven years
old and started singing as a soloist in the gospel choir at her church. She
studied singing at a Catholic school and occasionally performed in nightclubs
with her mother, who taught her.
Whitney Houston Career
She sang background vocals on the Michael Zager Band
record "Life's a Party" in 1977, and on Chaka Khan's single "I'm
Every Woman" the following year. Her mother declined the offer so that she
could continue high school despite being given the chance to sign with a
recording business.
She began modeling at the age of seventeen and
appeared in various magazines, including "Seventeen," where she made
history by becoming the first African American to appear on the cover. In
addition, she started acting, making appearances in episodes of TV shows like
"Gimme a Break," as she worked on honing her voice abilities.
She joined 'Arista Records' in 1983. The following
couple of years were spent by President Clive Davis assembling producers and
lyricists to combine her gospel-like sound with modern songs.
Her debut album, "Whitney Houston," which
was released in 1985, eventually surpassed it in terms of sales. She toured
Europe and the United States to packed houses and won various awards.
Hits soared to the top of the Billboard charts in the
late 1980s. She produced four number-one singles from one album, setting a
record for the most consecutive number-one singles by a woman. She sang the
national anthem at the "Super Bowl" in 1991 while considering an
acting career and the main part in "The Bodyguard."
She married the singer Bobby Brown in 1992 after
meeting him a few years before. She took the part in "The Bodyguard,"
and for the majority of the filming, she was carrying her daughter Bobbi
Kristina.
The movie made $390 million at the box office, and
Whitney Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You"
from the soundtrack became one of the all-time longest-running number one
singles.
She had reached the zenith of her career by 1993.
Later, she appeared in and produced a number of successful films, including
"Waiting to Exhale" (1995), "The Preacher's Wife" (1996),
and "Sparkle" (2012).
Whitney Houston Personal Legacy & Life
Bobby Brown and Whitney started dating after meeting
each other at an awards show. Eventually, after three years of courtship, the
pair exchanged vows on July 18, 1992.
However, she and Bobby Brown got divorced in 2007. She
was granted custody of Bobbi Kristina.
She battled alcohol and drug problems for a very long
time. She attended rehab twice and enrolled in an outpatient course in 2011.
She provided support to a number of children's
charities. Her efforts and legacy are carried on through the "Whitney
Foundation for Children."
The National Birth Defect Center's "Hearing and
Language Disorder Clinic" was renamed the "Whitney Houston Hearing
and Language Disorder Clinic" by Boston.
On February 11th, 2012, she was found unresponsive in
her suite's bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. "Accidental
drowning" was given as the death's cause.
Whitney Houston Bigger Works
Her most popular album is "Whitney Houston,"
which has sold over 24 million copies. She is well known for her work on the
soundtrack and in the movie "The Bodyguard." The best-selling female
singer's version of "I Will Always Love You" is hers, and the record
has sold more than 200 million copies worldwide.
Whitney Houston Recognition &
Achievements
Over 400 honors have been given to her, including 22
American Music honors, 30 Billboard Music Awards, two Emmys, six Grammys, and
six Grammys.
She was listed as the most honored female musician
ever in 'Guinness World Records' in 2009.
She is the only female artist with at least two albums
that spent at least ten weeks at number one. She had the soundtracks to
"Whitney Houston," "Whitney," and "The
Bodyguard."
More Death and Acting
After completing recovery, Houston appeared in
"Sparkle." She unfortunately passed away before the musical drama's
theatrical debut. On February 11, 2012, Houston's body was discovered in the
Beverly Hilton Hotel in California. The following day, at the 54th Grammy
Awards ceremony, the music world paid tribute to Adele after learning of her
untimely passing.
